[edit] Synopsis

One year after the events on Highland Beach revealed that the 4400 were taken and returned by future humans, the world is a much different place. NTAC agent Tom Baldwin has been riding a desk job for the past 12 months, penance for his acts of insubordination despite the fact that those acts were key in unlocking the mystery behind the 4400. Kyle Baldwin, Tom's son, has been living under observation at NTAC, where he has endured numerous tests that have revealed no new information. Diana Skouris, Tom's old partner, appeals to Nina Jarvis, the new head of the Pacific Northwest Division of NTAC, to reinstate Tom in the field. Diana has also adopted Maia Rutledge as her daughter, unaware that the girl still has precognitive insights.

Meanwhile, Richard, Lily, and their baby Isabelle (now six months old) are living in a mountain cabin, hiding from both Jordan Collier and NTAC. Collier has become the self-proclaimed figurehead of the 4400, and is on the verge of opening the first 4400 Center, a place intended not only for fellow returnees but also for regular, everyday people who are looking to "unlock" the 4400 within themselves. And Shawn Farrell has left his family behind to become Collier's protégé, using his healing ability to bring in big money contributors to the center.

NTAC gets a call from Abendson Psychiatric Hospital, where Tess Doerner, a 4400 paranoid schizophrenic, seems to have taken some sort of mind control over the institution's orderlies and inmates. Upon his release from NTAC, Kyle is determined to "deprogram" Shawn and rescue him from Collier's clutches. And Richard and Lily are forced to flee their home when a religious zealot decides that baby Isabelle is the devil and must be destroyed.

[edit] Detailed Summary

Richard wakes up from a dream where he's walking through the woods searching for Isabelle. In the dream, he hears her crying then hears a gunshot. He looks down and sees his bloodied hands then wakes up. Lily urges Richard to go back to bed, then they hear footsteps outside of the cabin. Richard gets to the front door in time to see a pickup driving away. Back inside, Lily notices the person that left slipped a note under the door which contains the following Bible passages: Psalm 19:8-10, Proverbs 28:1 and Revelation 21:8. More is written but is hidden from view. Lily & Richard fear someone has tracked them down, being that they are on the run from Jordan Collier & NTAC.

The first shots of The 4400 Center just days from opening are shown. Carol and David Sumlin and their son Peter arrive. Sean cures Peter of leukemia and the Sumlins are shown giving a check/donation to Jordan. Elsewhere, Diana & Maia arrive at a government building. Judge Henry Biderman of the 10th circuit family court of Seattle performs the official adoption of Maia by Diana.

At NTAC in Seattle, we hear Kyle and Tom talking inside “Quarantine A” room. Kyle doesn’t want to have another CAT scan. Tom convinces him to have another just to appease NTAC. Tom goes to the workout room to take out his aggressions on a punching bag. Diana comes in the exercise room and they talk about how its been awhile since they’ve seen each other. Vick Hubbard and 3 other unnamed agents replaced Tom while he was confined to a desk job for threatening another agent’s life in White Light.

Diana enters “Intel Room 3" where Marco, Brady Wingate and another Intel agent are discussing “white holes”. Diana asks Marco if she can have the project he’s been working on. Marco said he can’t give it to Diana because it’s been delivered upstairs already.

At Abendson Psychiatric Facility we see 4400 Tess Doerner drawing (with crayon) some sort of tower/device. Fellow-patient Kevin Burkhoff slips her the book “The Mountains of Madness” by H.P. Lovecraft.

Richard notices more notes like the one left in the cabin, but these are on every parked car on the street he’s walking down. At the 4400 Center, Jordan interrupts Sean’s massage by a young woman to show him his book “Forty-Four Hundred and Counting”.

Diana enters Nina Jarvis’ office at NTAC. She is holding a copy of a memo entitled “The necessity for the immediate reassignment of Thomas Baldwin to active field duty”. Nina thinks Diana wrote it, Diana admits she agrees with the sentiment. In actuality, this is the project Marco was working on and “delivered upstairs”.

Arlo Wolcott, an orderly at the psychiatric facility climbs the roof of "B Building" to obtain a weather vane. He is sucessful but slips on the ladder and dies. The weather vane is shown on one of many crayon drawings on Tess’ wall. Elsewhere, Richard comes back to the cabin, where Lily is packed and ready to go. Richard tells Lily that they don’t need to go because the “rant pamphlets” were all over town. Lily says she doesn’t feel safe there any more.

Maia is seen writing in her diary (which contains visions that she claims she isn’t having anymore). She hides it before Diana enters her room. They have a dinner party consisting of macaroni & cheese, mashed potatoes and white bread to celebrate the adoption.

Tom signs a letter of resignation that Nina wrote up as insurance if Tom “crosses the line”. He is once again a field agent. Nina, Tom and Diana talk about Tess Doerner. She was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia at the age of 15. She disappeared from the hospital in April 1955. An orderly was reported to NTAC as being killed with a possible connection to Tess. Before they leave to investigate, Tom tells Nina “there’s still one thing we have to get straight.” Next we see Tom and Kyle walking into Tom’s house with Kyle’s luggage. Kyle is glad to be free from quarantine.

Tom and Diana arrive at the hospital. More patients are working on Tess’ tower. They talk with Tess in her room. She tells them to be quiet as there are microphones in the walls (paranoia). Tom asks Tess if she asked the other patients for help in building the tower. Tess says she doesn’t like talking to them because they are crazy.

At the 4400 Center, Jordan is writhing in pain from some kind of recurring attack caused by Isabelle. Shawn heals Jordan of this attack and comments on how they’re occurring more frequently. Jordan Collier signs copies of his auto-biography. In the book, he claims that the 4400 were abducted by human beings from the future. The book is reported to contain copies of classified government memoranda that Collier says “prove his claims”. The documents are said to be from an anonymous source at NTAC. Nina Jarvis announces to the other agents that the “anonymous source” isn’t anonymous anymore and that Agent Hubbard will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

At the 4400 Center there are many visitors curious about “unlocking the 4400 within themselves”. Kyle comes in looking for Sean. Devon finds him and asks if she can sign him up for a tour. Kyle is upset he cannot see or enquire about Sean directly and is escorted out of the building by security guards. Tom & Diana arrive back at the hospital with Marco. The tower has gotten bigger. Patients as well as staff (including Dr. Clayton) are continuing the building process.

Richard and Lily both want to read a copy of Jordan’s book but the town won’t have any until the next day. They’re both glad that if they were abducted by people from the future they came back with a souvenir - Isabelle. Tom wonders if they get Tess away from the facility will the compulsion to build the tower fade. They take Tess down a hallway, Kevin sees this and tackles Tom. Tom calls for assistance from the orderlies.

Maia is playing “fish” (card game) with Carrie (a girl from a downstairs apartment). Maia asks Diana if she can go to Carrie’s sleepover birthday party and Diana reluctantly says ok.

Shawn complains to Jordan about how Kyle was treated in the lobby. Jordan says Kyle, Nikki and others are part of Sean’s old life and they would not understand what it is they are trying to accomplish at the center. Shawn says “Maybe I don’t understand we’re trying to do here either.” Jordan suggests he packs his bags and leave then.

At NTAC, Diana says Tess had a full medical workup and everything came back normal. Tom compares Tess to a queen ant controlling her drones. Tom talks to Tess behind a bullet-proof glass. Tess tells of her time while abducted, but its actually passages from the H.P. Lovecraft book. It appears Tom is being influenced behind the glass (with suggestions that he should help complete the tower). Diana talks to Agent Garrity on a cell phone only to realize he is now working on the tower. So much for their theory of removing Tess.

Lily pushes Isabelle’s stroller into a store - "June’s House of Gifts". Inside Josiah calls Isabelle an abomination. Glass shatters, things blow around and Lily can only pinpoint this power to Isabelle. They leave the store and find Richard at his mechanic job saying they have to leave now. At the hospital, the tower is aflame. Noone has called 911 to report the fire. Kevin falls on his knees exasperated. Tess screams in her room. Elsewhere, The reverend and his sons enter the cabin. Richard goes out a window and pulls out the carburetor of the truck so they can’t follow. The rear window is shot out as the Tyler’s make their escape.

Nina announces the entire hospital is under quarantine, patients will be locked down, staff and affected NTAC personnel will remain on site until they've isolated the source of the compulsion. Nina wonders what the device in Tess' drawing is supposed to be. Marco says his best guess is that Tess is telling the truth and it is a communication device.

Diana is suprised to hear a knock on her front door in the middle of the night. Carrie's mom and Maia are at the door. Maia was crying and wanted to be back home. Carrie's mom said some of the girls from the sleepover were teasing Maia because she had a crush on Frank Sinatra.

The reverend and his two sons arrive at a gas station and enquire an employee about, what we can only surmise would be, the whereabouts of the Tyler's vehicle. Meanwhile, Kyle answers the phone at home. Shawn hesitates then talks to Kyle. Elsewhere, The Tylers are driving down a dark road, seeing lights behind them. The truck speeds up and turns on all of its front lights. Richard suspects it is the reverent and asks Lily to put her head down. Richard speeds up then a tire blows and they crash in the woods. The truck turns around and heads into the forest and the car is abandoned.

Diana empties Maia's backpack from the sleepover. She finds Maia's Diary. The inside page reads "Maia - Things I See". Marco asks Diana if she's read Maia's diary. Diana said she wouldn't want Maia reading her diary. Marco asks "You have a diary? Am I in it?" Diana says "Don't flatter yourself."

Diana asks Tom if the name Gene Vecruso rings a bell? Tom says "Yeah returnee 927". Diana says he's at the "drunk tank" downtown and the need to ferry him back to his half-way house. Tom says give it to Mortimore or Falcone. Tom's mind is still on Tess' tower. Tom & Diana take Tess back to the hospital.

Shawn meats Kyle outside down a long flight of stairs somewhere. Kyle tells Shawn that alof of people are worried about him. Shawn says they don't need to worry about him and he's fine. Kyle says he's been to the place Shawn is living and there's some serious "Stepford Wives" vibes going on. Shawn says "he said you wouldn't understand." Kyle asks "Collier?" Shawn affirms and Kyle says "I got to tell you man, he was right."

Tom gets many patients out of their rooms to get them to work on the tower. In the forest, Lily notices some berries and points out that in a couple of days they'll be ripe enough to eat. Richard says "Don't eat them now, the last thing they need is to start craping up." Isabelle gazes at the berries and in a matter of seconds they mature enough to eat. Diana becomes obsessed about helping build the tower.

Collier tells Shawn that a special visitor with pancreatic cancer will be arriving that night. Her husband is willing to donate real estate for a 4400 center in Los Angeles. Nina brings a swat team to the hospital. Marco tells Tom that Tess' memories of the future are fabricated from a short story by H.P. Lovecraft's The Shadow Out of Time. The swat team breaks through the chain locked courtyard door but not before Diana can activate the tower. A sound is emitted from the tower and everyone nearby is knocked down.

A gunshot is heard, Lily screams. Richard is able to knockdown his captor and get to Lily. The gunshot was from the reverend killing his son, Gabrielle. Isabelle somehow forced that act on the reverend. The reverend then has a heart attack, once again it was Isabelle's doing. His other son arrives and Isabelle makes him point the shotgun up his jaw and fires.

The end result of the tower was it awoke Kevin Burkhoff from his mental state. He hadn't said anything for 6 years. Marco explains to Nina, Tom and Diana about the new ripple effect. Burkhoff specialized in dormant neural pathways, trying to wakeup parts of the brain that we can't use. Basically, Kevin can be called "The Father of 4400 Technology".

Kevin kisses Tess goodbye before leaving the hospital. Shawn is about to heal a sick woman. Kyle practices a golf swing with his dad. The Tylers hitchike for a ride. Diana kisses Maia goodnight then takes Maia's Diary into the living room. The line "Mommy's bosses will be punished" sticks out as she reads through the diary.

[edit] Trivia

  • Jeffrey Combs (Kevin Burkhoff) and Executive Procucer Ira Steven Behr have worked extensively together before, most notably in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, in which Combs played a number of characters, and at one point, two different characters in the same episode.
  • The placement of the H.P. Lovecraft novel could be a tip of the hat to Jeffrey Combs' previous roles in various films based on other H.P. Lovecraft novels, including Re-Animator, From Beyond, and he even played the author in the film Necronomicon.
