The Catastrophe

The Catastrophe is an event in the unaltered timeline which ultimately leads to the downfall of humankind.

In the future, there are at least two factions working. The first is the faction which wants history to remain unchanged, the second wishes to change history and send the 4400 back to do so. According to Jordan Collier, the first faction has barricaded itself in the world's last city while everyone else struggles to survive on the outside. The catastrophe somehow leads to this happening.

The catastrophe probably happens within a couple of decades of 2004, and "Starzl Mutation" suggests that catastrophe happens circa 2006-2008. The Catastrophe was first mentioned by "the being" in "White Light". News reports in Wake-Up Call warned the public that the 4400 were sent back to prevent the Catastrophe. It is also mentioned in the episodes "Gone", "Graduation Day", and "Terrible Swift Sword". Shawn's visions in the "Starzl Mutation" suggest that the catastrophe is a small group of promicin-equipped people, possibly American soldiers, attacking the general world population.

Matthew Ross said that the 4400 were the Catastrophe. Boyd Gelder said that "the real catastrophe is to sit back and do nothing."

At the end of "Gone", Sarah Rutledge gives the viewers the impression that Isabelle Tyler causes the catastrophe, having given Tom Baldwin the means to kill "a great evil that has been let loose into [the present]"

As of the end of the third season it is still not confirmed what the catastrophe actually is.

On March 8, 2007, SciFi.com released an interview with Ira Steven Behr in which he discusses The Catastrophe.
