The audience is introduced to four members of what would become known as the 4400 - Maia, Richard, Orson, and Shawn. A spacecraft originally believed to be a comet heads towards earth, leading many to believe death is iminent, and prompting governments to fire missles at it. The missles failed, and the "comet" headed towards a lake next to Mt. Rainer. Exactly 4,400 people appear. The 4400 are kept in quarantine for about six weeks.
Tom stays with his son Kyle in the hospital. Tom tries to get his old job at Homeland Security back in order to figure out what happened to his son. Dennis Ryland forced a reluctant Diana to be his partner. Richard meets Lily Moore in quarantine, and discovers she is Lily Bonham's granddaughter (his sweetheart). He and Lily developed a relationship after he had nowhere to go and her family didn't care about her anymore.
Orson Bailey was denied his old job back at his company, prompting him to accidentally kill Adam Kensington (the son of his business partner). Carl Morrissey develops enhanced strength and reflexes, and uses this to attack criminals in Bradley Park.
Richard is suprised at how much the world has changed since he's been gone. Lily discovers she is pregnant. Shawn gradually steals Nikki away from his brother, Danny. Maia shows an ability to predict the near-future, and develops a rapport with Diana. A serial killer is at it again. Jordan Collier arrives and starts organizing the 4400. A series of terrorist attacks are carried out by the brothers of one of Knox's victims. Tom has trouble with his wife, who he is not fully ready to divorce. The media won't quit covering the 4400, making life difficult for Dennis Ryland. A government agent arrives. Shawn develops a healing ability, and uses it to wake his cousin Kyle from a comma. Kyle isn't himself after waking up. Kyle takes Tom and Diana to Highland Beach, where Tom gets a message about what happened to the 4400. The 4400 were taken by people living in Earth's future in order to stop a catastrophe from leading to the downfall of humankind and extinction. Isabelle Tyler is born.
