Nikki Hudson was a student attending the same school as the Farrell brothers and their cousin Kyle, and was a secret admirer of Shawn. Kyle knew this, and asked Shawn on the night of his abduction if he would consider going out with her, but he declined, saying she was 14 years old and too young for him.

Three years later, when the 4400 returned to Earth, Nikki was now more attractive and mature and dating Shawn's younger brother Danny. Despite everyone's concerns about who the 4400 "really" were, including Danny's, Nikki was pro-active in her attempts to help them reintergrate into society. While doing this for Shawn, by supplying him with current-time music hits and favorite movies, she and Shawn gradually became more attracted to eachother. Danny noticed this, and became increasingly estranged to his brother, and this caused Nikki to break up with him because she felt he was being unreasonable and unfair to Shawn. Shawn, not wanting to see his brother upset, met with Nikki by Mount Rainier, and while enjoying the scenery, Nikki assured him that her breakup with Danny had nothing to do with him. Succumbing to their feelings, Nikki had sex with Shawn on top of the mountain. Danny later found out what had happened, and attacked his brother in rage, forcing him to use his ability to nearly drain the life out of Danny in self-defense. Horrified by nearly killing his brother, Shawn left home, but assured an upset Nikki that he still loved her.

Many months later, Nikki's father caught cancer, and she came to Shawn for help, and to reacquaint herself with him, as her feelings for him were still strong. Nikki was the girl he desired above all, but the immensely-powerful Isabelle Tyler subtlely threatened to kill her if she attempted to take Shawn, who she loved, away from her. This forced Nikki and Shawn to distance themselved from eachother.

Now that Isabelle's powers have been neutralized, Nikki may make another attempt to reconnect with Shawn.
