Life Interrupted was an episode showing Tom Baldwin's ideal life in a world where the 4400 never happened. It marked the beginning of his relationship with Alana, the first appearance of the Future Room, as well the possible lives of several characters had the 4400 never happened. It also provided viewers with a break from the overall arc of season two after Collier's death. The term "life interrupted" was originally used by the writers to describe what happened to the 4400, but in this case it refers to Tom waking up in a completely different world.

[edit] Synopsis

Tom Baldwin wakes up and goes to work to find everyone cheering for him, only he can't figure out why. The NTAC team heads to the 4400 Center, only it's the Collier museum instead. Collier isn't dead - he's the governor of Washington. He goes to the Collier museum with the other agents to find not only the man who betrayed him - but a door to a mysterious room. He researches Richard Tyler to find the he was shot down in December 1951 over Korea, Gary Navarro to find that he was a successful baseball player from the 1970s, and Maia to find that she's living in Seattle. Navarro was listed on the Heroes of Baseball Historical Archives, and he played for Cincinatti. The following appeared on Tom's computer screen about Richard: "Captain Richard Tyler 334 Fighter-Interceptor Squadron 5th Fighter-Interceptor Group was officially credited with the destruction of 3 enemy MIG-15 type in aerial combat air patrol near Sinajui, Korea at 09412 on 18 October 1951. Captain Tyler lead his fight in an attack on two MIG-15s. Captain Tyler fires strikes into the fusalage and observed the enemy canopy shelter. An enemy aircraft engaged Captain Tyler firing into his fusalage hitting Captain Tyler. Tyler's plane was observed hitting the ground and exploding. He is presumed dead December 8th, 1951." Tom goes to Maia's house and sees her, but it turns out that it's her granddaughter and Maia is an old woman. He can't figure out what's going on, until he figures out that the 4400 never happened, or at least no one knows about them.

He meets one woman who not only knows about the 4400 but claims to be one, his wife who he has never met before. Kyle was never in a coma, and is applying for medical school. He makes it into Stanford, even though he wrote on his application that he wanted to go into medicine because he thought nurses were sexy. Danny and Nikki are getting married, and Shawn's band is gaining success.

Tom kept looking for that mysterious room, only to find a storage closet. Diana sedated Tom after he wouldn't quit talking about the 4400. He's sent to NTAC Medical where he is interviewed about this world he's been living. Everyone seems to think he's just delusional after spending three weeks as a POW. He is put on another six weeks of medical leave after admitting that the 4400 never happened.

However, he can't keep from going to the musuem and looking at that door. He spent five hours one day looking at it, three hours the day before, and one Saturday he spent twelve hours looking at it. Diana visits him and tells him that even if he could get back to the other reality, things aren't that great there. There he's divorced, his sister's family is in chaos, his son has spent three years in a coma and one in quarantine, and the fate of the world is in jeapordy. He goes home to find Alana looking through old photos. They've gone to China, somewhere she's always wanted to go.

Eight years later, Tom and Alana renew their vows. Nina Jarvis is moving to Virginia to work with Dennis Ryland's private sector company in three weeks, and she's offering Tom the job of head of NTAC. He has a nightmare of walking along a dark street at night to find police cars heading somewhere. His son Kyle is bloody and is being arrested. While attending a party at the Collier Museum, he finds the mysterious room, and discovers that he's been living in an alternate reality for the last eight years. Tom agonizes over whether to leave this alternate reality or go back to reality. He tells Alana that she was creating all of this, and that if she just thought it wasn't there everything would go away. They have everyone meet them, where Alana wills Diana, Danny, Nikki, Shawn, and Kyle away.

He returns to reality, where he meets Alana outside NTAC.

Tom: What do you remember about The 4400?
Kendrick: It was the best sedan Citroen ever put out. Hydraulics came standard on every model.
