Gone was a two-part episode in which Maia and other 4400 children were re-abducted and sent into the 19th or early 20th century, and all memory of them in the early 21st century was erased. It was originally meant to be a one-part simple kidnapping story, but was changed after the writers debated it.

[edit] Key Points

[edit] Part One

  • Maia tells Diana that she is going to forget her, but it won't be her fault.
  • She writes in her diary that she "will be in the circle with Tyler Downing."
  • Marco finds out how he is going to die after reading one of Maia's entries.
  • A woman claiming to be Sarah Rutledge visits Maia and Diana. Diana is frightened and skeptical, and insists on a DNA test. Diana asks her why she hasn't replied to any of her letters. Sarah says that she's been a bit hard to find, and says that's she'll take a DNA test.
  • Richard goes through financial reports, trying to figure out what some huge payments were for. He asks Shawn, but he says he can't remember.
  • Shawn tells Richard and Matthew that he gave money to the Daniel Armand to start a defensive wing for the 4400, but this was before the Nova group was formed and anyone was killed.
  • Isabelle and Shawn make out in the stairwell. Devon walks in on them.
  • Shawn tells Richard that he has been sleeping with Isabelle. He doesn't take the news very well. Matthew comes in as a "referee," but takes Richard's side.
  • Matthew convinces Shawn and Richard to share control of the 4400 Center.
  • Matthew gives Isabelle a necklace.
  • Maia opens a door, and walks into the Future Room. Sarah appears from the dark and tells Maia that this was where she was taken the first time she was abducted. Maia asks if it is all a dream. Sarah tells her that there's been too much interferance. The 4400 have not changed the timeline, and the Catastrophe is still coming. They calculated wrong the first time, and now the five children must be sent further back into the timeline to fix everything.
  • Maia is sent further back into the past. All memory of her in the present is somehow erased.

[edit] Part Two

  • Daniel Armand calls Richard.
  • Shawn tells Richard that the Nova group only wants money and the names of every 4400 in the Center's database. They want to find 4400s with abilities they can use to kill people and "people will die."
  • Richard refues to have a meeting with Daniel Armand, and he makes Shawn crazy because of this.
  • Tom sees a young girl witout a face while on a joyride in one of Alana's fantasy worlds. He runs her over. They look for her and find her, but she has no face. When the come out of the fantasy world, Alana tells him that she creates these worlds out of memories and this girl was a "mental hiccup."
  • Tom sees the girl again, only this time with a face, who says that she's there because he brought her there.
  • Tom and Diana investigate the case of Christopher Dubov, a 4400 and corporate attorney who has put plenty of people in the unemployement line.
  • Christopher explains that his son attacked him but he doesn't want to press charges. He explains that the reason for this was that Christoper had the ability to matchmake people and did so with his wife and his dentist.
  • Tom visits Diana, only to find that she has been cutting images of young girls out of magazines for a project she's working on. On the wall of a spare bedroom are several of these clippings and the word "Maia" over and over again. Diana asks, "Who is she? Who is Maia?"
  • Alana takes Diana into an alternative reality in an attempt to find out who this girl is. They planned to go to her apartment, but instead went to a courthouse. There, a little girl takes Diana into the judge's chambers, and she is shown adoption papers. The girl asks if she still wants to do this. This memory was from Wake Up Call. The little girl hugs Diana, and suddenly she remembers everything.
  • Diana comes to, and tells Tom everything. Tom doesn't remember Maia, but he trusts Diana.
  • The group goes to NTAC, where Diana tries to convince Nina Jarvis of what happened. Jarvis isn't convinced, but says that if these children had been taken they were probably in the future, which is "out of our jurisdiction." Marco comes in, and tells them that he's found out what's happened to their kids. They go to a computer, where Marco shows them that Tyler Downing graduated first in his class in engineering from Yale in 1893. He invented synthetic petrolieum in 1915, and "you drove to work today because of this guy." Lindsey Hammond was adopted by rocket pioneer Robert Goddard, and created the composit materials used in the first lunar colonies (which exist in this new reality). Maia was a little harder to track down. She was sent back to the 1830s and joined a wagon train. She died of smallpox in 1947 at the age of 25. Someone copy the text from Maia's Online Diary about her experiences there. Diana was disraught.
  • Isabelle realizes that Matthew has no control over her. She raises him up into the air, and tells him that she will do her own shopping from now on.
  • Diana arrives at Tom and Alana's one night in the pouring rain, asking Alana to use her ability so she can go see Maia. She's been having trouble adjusting to the fact that her daughter was taken from her and died 150 years ago. Who wouldn't have trouble with that?
  • Diana enters a dream world where Maia asks for pancakes. She separates from Alana in reality, leaving them both on the floor. Tom walks in, checks Alana, and then checks Diana. Diana is somehow still in the dream world without Alana.
  • Diana is taken to the hospital.
  • Tom sits by her bedside and tells her that the sacrafices the future has been asking for must stop. He tells her that he has a plan, this may or may not be goodbye, and he wishes she was there to stop him.
  • Tom ties a rope to a post and puts a noose around his neck, and jumps from a bridge with no one else around. His plan worked, and he arrives in the future room. He asks, "It worked, right? I'm not dead." Sarah tells him, "This time, no. Next time, you might not be so fortunate." He demands that she return Maia and the other children to him. She responds that they were never meant to remember them, and they had gone to "great lengths to spare you any pain." Tom tells her that it didn't work. Sarah says that they had "underestimated the bonds they had forged." Tom tells her that it's called family, and asks if the people in her time are familiar with the concept. She didn't like that question.
  • Tom is sent back to the present, to a house where the five children are. He goes inside to find an envelope, and then goes upstairs to find Maia and the others. Maia asks for her mother, and Tom takes her to the hospital.
  • Tom opens the box, and finds a syringe and a note reading "Kill Isabelle."

[edit] Part One

[edit] Synopsis

Diana and Maia are approached by a woman claiming to be Sarah Rutledge, Maia's long lost sister, born after Maia's abduction. But the concept of fitting another Rutledge into her life becomes the least of Diana's worries when Sarah abducts Maia.

It's learned through DNA testing that Sarah isn't Maia's sister, but an agent claiming to be from the future who has been sent back to abduct Maia, and other selected 4400 children, to be re-seeded into the past. Maia and the other children will have their memory erased as part of the time relocation. The agent claims that Maia and the other kidnapped children will be forgotten by the present.

Elsewhere, Richard and Matthew convince Shawn to share leadership of the 4400 Center with Richard. At first, Matthew convinces Isabelle to persuade Shawn toward reliquishing command, but she betrays Matthew and encourages Shawn to keep his job. Isabelle and Shawn have become lovers, but are keeping it secret. Later, Isabelle confronts Matthew, using her power to suspend him in the air. Isabelle claims that she is no longer afraid of Matthew.

Alana has decided to take a job at The 4400 Center as a teacher. Tom is concerned that she is using her powers on other people.

[edit] Part Two

[edit] Synopsis

After the future abducted a select few 4400 children, including Maia Skouris, and re-seeded them back into the timeline, they erased the children from the memories of anyone who knew them. Despite the future's best efforts, Tom remembers her from alterative realities created by Alana and Diana eventually began to remember Maia. After Diana enters an alternative reality with Alana, she realizes that Maia and the other children were abducted.

[edit] The Children

With Marco's help, Tom and Diana were able to locate, in the pages of history, where and when some of the children were sent. Tyler Downing graduated first in his class from in engineering from Yale, and Lindsey Hammond invented synthetic composite materials used in lunar colonies. In all cases, each child helped to bring forth some advancement for humanity, except for Maia who died of smallpox when she was 25. Apparently she was important enough to be reabducted and sent back to the 19th century but not important enough for the future to vaccinate here. This indicates public health problems in the future. Diana, desperate to see her daughter, enters an alternate reality, through Alana's ability, where she can spend time with Maia.

Knowing she will never see the real Maia again, Diana decides to stay in the alternate reality permanently -- despite that strain of staying there for an extended period of time would result in certain death in a matter of weeks.

[edit] Future Room

Tom and Alana discuss how the future has asked for too many sacrifices, and he thinks of a way to get the future's attention. In order to save Diana and get back the children, Tom decides to play the ultimate game of chicken with the future. Knowing he's a part of the future's plan, Tom attempts suicide with the hope that the future will intervene and grant him an audience. It works, and he arrives in the Future Room. Tom tells them that they had no right to take Maia or the other children and let them die at relatively early ages. Sarah explains that the 4400 haven't changed the timeline, and the Catastrophe is still coming. After much debate, the future brokers a deal with Tom. In exchange for returning the children, Tom must perform a task for them. Tom agrees. It is only after the children are returned and Diana is reunited with Maia that Tom finds an envelope left for him by the future revealing his task. It contains a syringe filled with an unkown substance and a note that reads "Kill Isabelle".

[edit] 4400 Center

At The 4400 Center, Richard discovers that Shawn and Isabelle have been engaged in a physical relationship. But this conflict is forced to the back burner when the Nova Group contacts The Center and offers to remove the bounty on Shawn's head in exchange for a meeting with Richard. At Shawn and Matthew's urging, Richard eventually decides not to meet with them. In response, the Nova Group finally exacts their revenge on Shawn -- one of their agents, Daniel Armand, uses his ability to afflict Shawn with a mental illness.
