[edit] Synopsis

Tom and Diana are sent out to investigate a homicide that resembles that of a serial killer who was never caught nor heard from for 25 years. The first suspect is Oliver Knox, a member of the 4400. However, Knox has an alibi for the night of the murder and another man confesses to all the crimes. Tom and Diana suspect that Knox is luring people to kill for him and try to lay a trap on him. Meanwhile, people begin to turn hostile toward the 4400, and Jordan Collier decides to organize his fellow returnees and create a sanctuary for them. Richard and Lily are the first to take advantage of his offer, yet they feel uneasy about Collier's interest in them.

[edit] Detailed Summary

A serial killer sends a letter to Sheriff James Conrad, the man who's been assigned to this case for years. Included in the letter is a grisly Polaroid of the killer's latest victim.

The next day at HomeSec, Ryland, Tom and Diana pour over an article about Oliver Knox, the alleged Friday Harbour Killer, returning after 21 years. He is, of course, one of the 4400 and Ryland realizes this is just the kind of story that protesters are looking for to argue that the abductees need to be re-quarantined. In fact, there is a talk show host named Barbara Yates who is pushing for a round up. Ryland sends Tom and Diana to Friday Harbour to investigate.

Meanwhile, Richard, Lily and Shawn are all forced into therapy. The doctor seems to be clueless as to their frustrations about assimilating back into the world. Richard is upset that he can't get a job, Shawn is upset that his brother Danny is not happy to see him back and Lily is worried about her baby.

Later, when Tom and Diana meet Sheriff Conrad, he informs them that although Knox seems like the killer, he's always had an alibi, and he did yesterday. He was 100 miles away taking a test to get a license as a respiratory therapist. Conrad relates a story about the time that Knox was shot in the chest with an arrow while hunting and how he walked the four miles to the emergency room. Tom and Diana pay a visit to Knox, who is smug and uncooperative. Diana thinks he's lying and even though he has an alibi, he's somehow still involved.

Elsewhere, Nikki and Shawn run into each other at school and agree to not discuss the kiss. Nikki briefly mentions how cool it is that Shawn can heal people, but he doesn't want to talk about it.

That night, Knox snaps a Polaroid of a record store clerk and heads to a local bar. He meets Charlie and shows him a picture of the girl. Charlie is confused, but Knox tells him a story that makes it all clear.

Shawn decides he needs to get out of the house and think for awhile. He drives to the lake where he was found, and is surprised to discover lots of the 4400 also standing around. Jordan Collier, a self made millionaire and the most famous of the 4400, offers to hold a meeting at his hotel on Thursday night to discuss their future. The group is intrigued.

The next morning, Danny finds Tom. He tells Tom that Shawn almost killed a kid at school a few weeks back, by sucking the life out of him. Although he feels bad that he's betraying his own brother, Danny is more worried about losing his girlfriend Nikki to him.

Later, Tom and Diana find a single fingerprint at the latest murder scene. They trace it back to Philip Rodriguez who was paroled just six months ago. But when they go to his apartment, they find him dead in his bathroom. An apparent suicide by hanging. With his body is a note, confessing to the nine killings. But Tom and Diana aren't quite ready to let Knox off the hook. That night, Charlie is seen stalking the record store clerk.

Shawn's flashback

Meanwhile, Susan confronts her sons about their tension. Shawn and Danny both decide to pretend they are getting along great, but Susan isn't buying it. Elsewhere, Diana comes home to discover her babysitter quitting because of one of Maia's predictions.

Over at the hospital, Shawn runs into his aunt Linda. She asks him if he had anything to do with Kyle's episode a few weeks back. Shawn recalls how his cousin almost came out of his coma when he (Shawn) touched him. But he denies knowing anything about it.

The next day, Charlie walks down a street, covered in blood. He tries to kill himself by stepping in front of a bus, but the bus stops short of hitting him. A cop arrests Charlie, who confesses to ""killing them all."" Later, Conrad tells Tom and Diana that Charlie can't be the killer, because he was five when they first started. And Lopez was left-handed whereas the murderer was right handed. Tom and Diana begin to see a pattern. At the party, Collier is making his rounds to the various 4400 members. He's schmoozing all of them, but especially Shawn, who feels he has finally found someone he can talk to. Collier makes his way over to Richard and Lily and they confess Lily's pregnancy. Collier offers Richard a job to help out.

The next day, Tom and Diana meet up with Conrad. The killer has sent a letter. Since Charlie is in jail, and he couldn't have sent the mail, he cannot be the main killer. While this is happening, Knox hands a Polaroid picture of a female bartender to a man named Aaron. Aaron is just as confused as Charlie was, until, once again, Knox tells him a story. Then things become clear.

The next day, Ryland has a meeting with Barbara Yates and warns her to tone it down on the anti-4400 reports. She refuses, and he abruptly ends the conversation. The gauntlet has been thrown down, and there will be no peace between them. Meanwhile, Shawn goes to the beach where he was abducted and has a flash of memory. He sees Kyle being taken, and remembers running and pushing his cousin out of the way. He saw Kyle dying on the beach, and then he (Shawn) was gone in a flash.

Later, Felicia the bartender, is out for a jog when Aaron approaches her. He tries to kill her but Conrad, Tom, Diana and the police descend upon him. When they take him to the station, he won't tell them anything. They go over to Knox's to find the surveillance cop dead and Knox gone. Inside Knox's house, the walls are covered in dark liquid and there are pictures, clippings and clothing from all the victims. Tom realizes no one is watching Felicia and they race to her house. But Knox is already there, trying to finish the job Aaron started. Just as he's about to slit her throat, Conrad, Tom and the cops show up. Tom gets Felicia to safety and hits Knox in the nose with the butt of his gun. He's taken into custody and placed in a sound proof cell. Tom, Diana and Marco from, The Theory Room, realize that other members of the 4400 have used their gifts to profoundly change things for the better. But they don't understand what ripple effect Knox's alien-enhanced killing spree will have on the world, and whether or not it will be good or bad.

Kyle awake!
Kyle awake!

Elsewhere, Collier has purchased a large housing community for the 4400 to live in. Back at Diana's there is a news report that all the names and addresses of the 4400 have been released on the Internet. Maia tells Diana not to get too close because they won't be together that much longer. Over at the hospital, Tom walks in to Kyle's room, only to find Shawn sitting there wide eyed. Before he can ask any questions, Shawn moves over, to reveal Kyle. Awake.
