Darren Piersahl was an Army Ranger in the U.S. Military with the rank of Sergeant who served in Iraq with his fellow officer and best friend; Staff Sergeant John Shaffner.
In 2005, Haspelcorp, with the aid of the U.S. Government and military officials, selected Piersahl and Shaffner for the new enhanced soldier program, which involved physically-prime soldiers being injected with promicin filtered from the blood of Isabelle Tyler, leading to them developing 4400-like abilities, all for the purpose of defending the country they loyally served against hostile threats.
Because the program was top secret, the military arranged for Piersahl and Shaffner to officially "die" when the helicopter they are supposedly in crashed in Iraq, leaving them free to join the program. Though nearly everyone accepted this, his father Lee, did his own investigation and discovered that the military had made a critical mistake; the helicopter Piersahl alledgedly died in was built to hold four people, but six were in it during the crash. However, all attempts to get answers failed.
Now in the program under the command of General Randa, Piersahl and the other 19 recruits were each given initial doses of promicin to see who was viable for the program, leading to the deaths of 10 of the recruits due to the 50% mortality rate, while Piersahl, Shaffner and 8 others survived and began training and conditioning for service in the new elite fighting force, all the while being given constant updated doses of promicin, adrenaline and other stimulants until their abilities emerged. Piersahl and the other soldiers also went through learning sessions about the 4400 and the reasons behind their return, which included the discovery that should a 4400 have a child with a person with the Starzl Mutation, their children would have 4400-like abilities. He still maintained a friendship with Shaffner, however, and often shared stories in their spare time, and Piersahl often mentioned Eagle Creek, a mountain-side lake he often liked to go to.
Piersahl was distinguished as being the first enhanced soldier in the history of the program to develop an ability, as during test fighting, his ability, oxidization, manifested and he accidentally killed one of the trainers by oxidizing every cell in his body, reducing his body to a dessicated husk. The other soldiers, trainers, scientists and government observers were all shocked at this, but Piersahl was frightened to the point where, combined with all the medication he was being forced to take, Piersahl went insane.
Believing that the 4400 shouldn't be allowed to "change" the world he loyally served to protect, Piersahl and Shaffner escaped from the facility. Unbeknownst to Shaffner, who had escaped simply because he wanted no part of the program, Piersahl escaped for the purpose of wiping out the 4400, first by killing all of the Starzl Mutants as a way to stop the growth of their population. After separating from Shaffner, Piersahl stole a copy of the list containing the names of all 123 Starzl Mutants and began to hunt them down one at a time, first by killing Tim McCarren, a male prostitue after bringing him to a remote location of a forest, Paula Nakata, an attorney Piersahl intercepted on a stairway of the apartment she lived in while she was exercising on it, Holly Martin, a housewife Piersahl cornered while she was alone at home, all the while leaving their list numbers on their corpses as a form of calling-card and maintaining a camp at his favourite relaxing spot in Eagle Creek between killings. Haspelcorp, however, did not order him to do any of this, and began making preperations to stop Piersahl.
NTAC began investigating the murders, and eventually realised Piersahl had begun his murders by following the order of numbers on Shaffner's dog-tags (271192384577), and quickly intercepted and stopped him from killing Alex Messina, a bike-shop owner Piersahl was previously attempting to convince to come around the back of the shop to supposedly fix his bicycle before the agents arrival, but failed to find Piersahl as he was spying on them from his car. Piersahl left NTAC Agents Tom Baldwin and Diana Skouris a warning to not interfere again, and that he couldn't be stopped.
Baldwin and Skouris, now aided by Shaffner who wanted to help his friend, went with a large team of agents to Eagle Creek to capture Piersahl. Shaffner decided to go on ahead, and was confronted by a wildly-active Piersahl wielding a large knife. Shaffner initially calmed him down, and Piersahl was ecstatic to see his friend again, thinking Shaffner was there to help him in his "mission". However, Shaffner tried to convince Piersahl to stop and he had brought people with him to help. When Piersahl saw that the approaching people were NTAC Agents, Piersahl finally lost all sense of sanity and, in a panicked rage, attacked Shaffner. Shaffner was able to grab the knife off Piersahl and repeatedly stabbed him in the chest, critically injuring him, but Piersahl used his ability on Shaffner, killing him. Piersahl fled into the woods pursued by NTAC Agents, and eventually waited to confront them, and quickly disarmed and attacked Baldwin, eventually forcing themselves into a lake. Just as he was poised to kill Baldwin, Piersahl, succumbing to the wounds Shaffner inflicted upon him, collapsed in the water and died. His body was later brought back to NTAC for furthur study.
The crisis Piersahl caused, later dubbed "The Piersahl Incident" by Haspelcorp, went on to delay the enhanced-soldier program, as the scientists administering the promicin grew fearful of how much they used on the remaining recruits, and instead adopted a more cautious nature, delaying the program by months.
