Alana Mareva is a 4400 who was introduced during a "what if" episode, which actually ended up being her power - to create alternate realities as a very realistic hallucination.
In her alternate reality, Alana unconsciously created a world in which she was married to Tom Baldwin for 8 years. During the course of the episode, Tom gradually learned things weren't right, and Alana destroyed her reality. While the reality was fake, the bond between her and Tom was real, and they continued their life together in the real world, albeit as boyfriend/girlfriend not husband/wife.
Her ability was strictly given to her so that she could help Tom and act as a means of support for him.

[edit] Season 2
Alana became ill as a result of the promicin inhibitor, and was not able to tell the difference between reality and her alternative realities. She survived quarantine.
[edit] Season 3
In The Home Front, Alana tips off Gary Navarro before NTAC can capture Gary. They are both labeled as supporters of the Nova Group and become fugitives headed to Canada. In The Gospel According To Collier, Alana returns to live with Tom after helping unlock Jordan's amnesia. At the end of Fifty-Fifty, a light in the sky opens up and snatches Alana. Some speculate that she was re-abducted by agents from the future.
Alana's husband and son died in a car accident caused by a drunk driver in 1997.
[edit] Season 4
In The Wrath of Graham, it is revealed that she was placed back into history before 1885, as evident by the painting, Alana In Repose.
